Control4 has been one of our favorite all-in-one remotes for many years. Its combination of a clean simple button layout on the hand held remote, combined with an intuitive on screen display make using even the most complicated A/V system a breeze. When you combine this with the robust ZigBee wireless network (no more pointing the remote) you have one touch control that’s easy to love. Recently, Control4 took the “brains” of their systems and upgraded them. Faster and more powerful – they basically gave them the six million dollar man treatment. (Yes, I just dated myself!)
“So what is this Control 4 you speak of?”
Control4 is a system of components and software designed to integrate the control of various systems in your home into a single interface. In English – this means you can use one remote or touch screen to turn on the TV, control your music, turn lights on and off, adjust the A/C, arm the security system, etc. Many call this “home automation”, but we prefer the term “system integration”.
What are the primary advantages of Control4 over its competition? To help keep this blog brief, I will touch on just a few of Control4’s key strengths. First, it’s easy to add to an existing house … most of the parts utilize the same wiring that already exists in your home. Control4 is modular, so you can start small and add more features down the road. Control4 is very easy to use. That’s an important feature, as the main purpose of integration systems is to simplify. Control4 is reliable … its products are used daily in both residential and commercial environments. And Control4 does it at a fraction of the cost of other integration system. In other words, us mere mortals can now afford a system that was previous available only to the rich or famous.
“So you think you’re so smart?”
At the heart of any Control4 system is the controller. Think of the controller as the brains of the system. And these are the pieces that Control 4 recently upgraded. There are two to choose from. The HC-250 is designed for single room applications or smaller systems. Its bigger brother, the HC-800 is designed for the most demanding systems – like your whole house! And thanks to a more powerful processor, the new Control4 controllers are 4 to 10 times faster than the previous model. Both have additional upgrades and features, making them essential parts of any A/V system.
“Nice brains, but what about the remote?”
For simple control of your A/V system, it’s hard to beat the Control4 SR-250 hand-held remote. It fits comfortably in your hand, the buttons are logically grouped, and the top display makes it even easier to use. It is truly the least expensive remote that we have found that passes the “baby-sitter test”. What’s the baby-sitter test? Simple – you can hand the remote to the baby-sitter or a house guest, and within seconds they can use even the most complicated A/V system.
Want something a little cooler? Opt for the TSMC7 full color wireless touch screen. Controlling your entire house has never been easier. With a built in video camera, microphone and speaker, house-wide audio and video intercom is even possible.
And yes – with Control4 there is always the option to use your laptop, iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet … even when you are away from home. Running late? No problem, use your iPhone to turn on the front porch light and even unlock the front door to let your guests inside. Returning from a vacation? Turn on the heat while waiting for your luggage at the airport so you come home to a nice warm house. Running late and forgot to turn off the upstairs lights? No problem – turn them off as you hop in your car. Your kids are too busy talking on their phones and haven’t gotten their homework or chores done? Um, that last one’s all you.
